BORN TO DO MORE THAN LIVE
summer rain painted our hair
slick against our necks.
with tough soles and
knees knowing of the risk,
we flew down the gravel road.
ghost children, chasing lightning
like two keys on a kite.
we shed our fears like sweaters
and petals for boys we didn't like anyway,
running without counting on the ground
to guide us.
my chest was buzzing with all the things
I would sing to the sky if it ever
bent down to listen.
in those moments I was convinced
we were born to do more than live.
I was half girl, half horizon
and too fast to feel the weight of it.
